The Possibility of Now Kim Culbertson Books

The overwhelming pressure of high school, middle school, sometimes even elementary school, has teenagers spiraling toward a mental breakdown long before the post-college quarter-life crisis. THE POSSIBILITY OF NOW captures teenage anxiety perfectly (but not too perfectly—that would be stressful and exhausting to read!). I loved reading Mara’s point of view as she takes a step back from her high pressure private school life to live with her estranged father in Tahoe. Spending actual time with her father Trick and meeting new people is also, of course, anxiety inducing, but the people and the environment in Tahoe allow Mara to slow down and see that there are many ways of living outside of the walls of her prestigious school.

Life in Tahoe isn’t all snowflakes and sunshine, though, and it was humbling to see—through Mara—that even people in the most stereotypically “relaxing” places can have their own troubles. Isabel, with her affinity for schoolwork and Olympic-ready skiing, is almost who Mara could have been if her mother hadn’t moved them out of Tahoe. Like Mara, Isabel doesn’t relax all that easily. On the flip side, semi-romantic interest Beck struggles with his inability to please his father, and Beck has convinced himself that school and skiing are useless wastes of time. Both characters helped Mara—and me, as the reader—learn quite a bit about how much effort is enough, and how much is too much. Slowing down doesn’t mean giving up, and no one is really paying attention to your mistakes anyway.

Full of lists, skiing, and an endearing cast of characters, THE POSSIBILITY OF NOW is such an enjoyable read, especially for someone who has a hard time stepping back from the pressures of life.

The Possibility of Now Kim Culbertson Books Reviews

Wow! Talk about the stress you face in school...this poor girl has reached her limit! Mara's total meltdown during her calculus exam is captured on You Tube and her life is changed forever.

The story unravels as Mara decides to take a break from her perfectionist life to visit the dad that she only has a bit of memory of due to her Mom's "let's keep it a secret" attitude. Yes, Mara's family life at home with her brothers and stepdad is great, but she feels a new change of pace and life style is needed to keep her emotions in check. Mom's not crazy about the idea, but agrees to let her go to Tahoe if certain criteria is met.

Once there, Mara tries to figure out how to connect with her dad Trick, a laid back ski bum who lives life as easy as possible. Mara makes do with the living conditions, keeping up school work since she is suppose to go back after her break at Tahoe. Friends are made, and love is in the air...but which guy is going to win her heart as we are kept guessing who is the good guy in all of this. Misunderstandings are made, but also the truth comes out about why Trick and Mom have split up.

The ending was very satisfying, tying up loose ends, and revealing believable truths. This author knows how to spin a Young Adult story, making it as realistic as you can get.
I've been a fan of Kim Culbertson's work for years, and I was so excited for The Possibility of Now. It did not disappoint! Mara James is a relatable protagonist who struggles with her lofty self-imposed goals. After a major breakdown in the middle of a calculus test, she decides to take a break to reexamine her life. That break is in the form of a stay in Tahoe with a laid-back father she barely knows. Through the ups and downs of Mara's journey of self discovery, Culbertson's writing tugs at your heartstrings. A must read!
From the very start, this story will capture you and suck you in. Love a good coming of age story!
Bought two copies for my nieces on the east coast. They enjoyed the characters and the way the story related to their lives.
A nice, quiet contemporary reminiscent of Sarah Dessen and Jennifer E. Smith. A great read for a cold winter night.
I very much enjoyed the scenery of the book, but felt it was kind of repetitive, taking too much time on the mountain instead of the Valley (although it could be due to I'm not a big Ski fan). I would have liked to see her interact a little more with her dad, though I still found the story enjoyable. Liked the last two chapters (won't say why because it'd be a spoiler). Fan of teen books, fish-out-of-water stories, and skiers will love this story.
List of things I LOVE about The Possibility of Now
1. Therapy has cookies?
2. Staccato manic mom talk
3. Whispers "You're in Tahoe, relax."
4. An alarming case of bed head
5. Romanticizing snow and skiing...two things I'd rather watch than participate in. See #12.
6. Neverland parallel
7. The Awkward Olympics
8. The word vegan appears without a hint of judgement.
9. Nods as enthusiastically as she can without wrecking her hair.
10. Mara is my twin perfectionist and list-maker ('cept I'm in recovery—for the perfection part, not the lists. Obvs.)
11. Mara's speech to Beck
12. The author's gratitude list.
13. That Culbertson learned to ski as an adult—something I've happily avoided until her awesome writing had to go inspire me. Hopefully I'll get over it though. Because. Cold. Wet. Awful. And cold PLUS wet? Unbearable.
14. Fantastic depth of characters. Two of my faves Logan and Oli. And of course the cautionary tale of leaning into Laurenland.
15. That Culbertson nimbly wove together enriching personal development and entertainment.
16. That reading this was on my list of what I wanted to do just for myself this week, and I did it!
17. Culbertson's humor, fluency, and holy smokes...her narration of what it feels like to be a (straight) teen girl fluttered for a cute teen boy. Wow. Just wow.

And now...I need to go look for my car keys.
